The Auvergne Pointer is a solid, medium pointing dog with a broad head, dropped ears, and a short coat that looks misted or blue from heavy black ticking on white. The outline is that of a sturdy French braque, built for a full day in the field.

A French gundog with a short coat and a worker’s appetite for field time; a house companion if the days include real exercise.

The Auvergne Pointer, or Braque d’Auvergne, is a French gundog from the volcanic highlands of Auvergne. It was used as a close-working pointer and retriever on birds. The UKC classes it as a Gun Dog.

Temperament

These pointers are typically gentle at home and earnest in the field. They want to work with their handler and can be sensitive to rough handling. They need more exercise than a casual companion of the same size.

Training

They take well to pointing and retrieving work if sessions stay short and consistent. Start bird manners early.

Care and grooming

Wipe the short coat after work and clean the ears. A daily walk or field run is more important than fancy grooming.

The breed is generally sturdy. Hip dysplasia and ear infections can occur, as in other pointing breeds.
