The Bedlington Terrier is a light, arched, lamb-like terrier with a pear-shaped head, hanging ears, and a crisp, linty coat. The body is flexible and the gait is light and springy.

A lamb-coated terrier who can live in an apartment if exercised; the coat needs clipping, and he is quieter than many terriers but still a hunter at heart.

The Bedlington Terrier was developed in the mining country of Northumberland, England, to hunt vermin, otter, and badger. Its clipped outline looks like a lamb; the dog underneath is still a terrier. The AKC and UKC both place it in the Terrier Group.

Temperament

Bedlingtons are typically gentle in the house and game when a chase starts. They are usually good with their own people and may be reserved with strangers. They can be dog-aggressive if they are not socialized.

Training

They learn quickly and get bored with drill. Keep sessions short and socialize them with other dogs while they are young.

Care and grooming

The coat does not shed in the usual way; it must be clipped and combed on a regular schedule or it will mat. Plan on professional grooming or learn the clip.

Shedding

Low; loose hair stays in the coat until it is combed out.

Health

Bedlington Terriers may inherit copper toxicosis, a liver disease. DNA testing of breeding stock is strongly recommended.
