The Cane Corso is a large, athletic Italian mastiff with a broad head, cropped or natural ears, and a short coat. The body is muscular and the expression is watchful rather than sloppy.

A large, short-coated Italian guardian for a house, a fence, and training; quiet with his people if worked, but too much dog for a small apartment.

The Cane Corso is an Italian farm and guard dog, used on stock and property in the south of Italy. The name comes from a Latin word for a robust working dog. The AKC lists the breed in Miscellaneous in this database; the UKC classes it as a Guardian Dog.

Temperament

This is a confident, territorial guardian. It is typically devoted to its own family and reserved with strangers. It is too much dog for an owner who wants a soft pet and no training.

Socialize early and keep the rules clear. A Cane Corso that is allowed to make its own decisions about visitors becomes a liability.

Care and grooming

Wipe the short coat weekly. Grow this heavy breed slowly and keep adults lean.

Health

Cane Corsos may develop hip and elbow dysplasia, eyelid problems, and bloat. Joint screening of breeding stock is important.
