The Dutch Shepherd is a medium-to-large, well-muscled herding dog that comes in short, long, and rough coats, always in brindle. The ears are erect, and the outline is that of a sober farm shepherd, not a flashy show dog.

A short- or long-coated Dutch working shepherd who needs a job every day; a watchful voice and a poor match for a first-time, low-activity home.

The Dutch Shepherd, or Hollandse Herdershond, is a herding and farm dog from the Netherlands. It worked sheep, kept the yard, and later did police and sport work. The UKC classes it as a Herding Dog.

Temperament

These shepherds are typically loyal, alert, and tied to their handler. They need a job and can become noisy or sharp if they are left idle. They are usually reserved with strangers.

Training

They learn quickly and enjoy herding, obedience, and protection sport. Be consistent; a bored Dutch Shepherd will invent work.

Care and grooming

Brush weekly; rough and long coats need more combing than the short coat. Give this breed a daily job or a long structured walk.

Shedding

Moderate; heavier seasonally.

Health

Dutch Shepherds may develop hip dysplasia and inflammatory disease in some lines. Ask breeders about hip scores and family health history.
