The East Siberian Laika is a medium, wolf-like hunting dog with erect ears, a curled tail, and a dense double coat. The body is slightly longer than tall, built for taiga work rather than for a sled team only.

A Siberian hunting laika for cold country and a fence: a dense coat, a hunt howl, and little interest in a quiet heated apartment.

The East Siberian Laika, or Vostotchno-Sibirskaia Laika, is a Russian hunting laika from eastern Siberia. It is used on squirrel, sable, bear, and other game, and it trees or bays rather than packing like a scenthound. The UKC classes it as a Northern Breed.

Temperament

These laikas are typically independent, loyal to their hunter, and reserved with strangers. They have a strong prey drive and a ringing bark on game. They are not a quiet apartment breed.

Training

Train the recall early and give the dog a hunting job or a long outing. Harsh methods make this breed shut down or leave.

Care and grooming

Brush the double coat weekly, and daily when the undercoat blows. They need cold-weather exercise more than fancy trimming.

Seasonal and heavy.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Hip dysplasia can occur; keep working dogs fit rather than overfed.
