The Great Gascony Hound is a large, imposing pack hound with a long head, long dropped ears, and a short slate-blue coat heavily ticked with black. The voice is deep, and the outline is that of a slow, methodical French running hound.

The Great Gascony Hound, or Grand Bleu de Gascogne, is an old French pack hound from Gascony, used on wolf in earlier centuries and on hare and deer later. The UKC classes it as a Scenthound.

Color: Slate blue (white heavily ticked with black) with black patches; tan on the head is common
Coat: Short, dense, and fairly thick

Temperament

These hounds are typically gentle at home and determined on a scent. They have a booming voice and need more running than a short walk. They are not quiet apartment dogs.

Training

Train the recall early and use a long line. Scent will beat a weak recall.

Care and grooming

Wipe the short coat and clean the long ears after work.

Low to moderate.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Ear infections and hip issues can occur in this large, heavy-eared hound.
