The Lagotto Romagnolo is a medium, square water dog with a dense curly coat, a bearded face, and dropped ears. The outline is that of a rustic retriever, built to work in marsh and later to find truffles.

A medium truffle dog with a woolly coat that needs clipping; a moderate voice and a need for work or long walks, happier in a house than in a still flat.

The Lagotto Romagnolo is an Italian water dog from Romagna. After the marshes were drained it became the traditional truffle dog.

Color: Off-white, white with brown or orange, brown, or orange; a brown roan also occurs
Coat: Woolly, tight curls all over the body; it is clipped, not brushed out

Temperament

Lagotti are typically affectionate, busy, and eager to use their nose. They need work, not just a short walk. They can be reserved with strangers.

Training

They learn scent work readily. Keep sessions short and upbeat.

Care and grooming

Do not brush the curls out; clip the coat on a schedule and keep it from felting.

Shedding

Low; loose hair is held in the curls.

Health

Lagotti may develop hip dysplasia, juvenile epilepsy, and a storage disease (LSD) in some lines. Ask breeders about DNA tests.
