The Portuguese Water Dog is a medium, robust water dog with a curly or wavy single coat, a broad head, and a tail with a plume at the end. The outline is slightly rectangular and the feet are webbed.

A medium working water dog who can share a house if swam and trained; a curly or wavy coat that needs clipping, and a voice that comments when bored.

The Portuguese Water Dog, or Cao de Agua, worked with fishermen on the Portuguese coast, retrieving gear and swimming between boats. The AKC places it in the Working Group; the UKC classes it as a Gun Dog.

Temperament

Porties are typically lively, people-oriented, and fond of water. They need swimming or retrieving games, not just a short walk. They can be vocal and do not enjoy being left alone all day.

Training

They learn quickly and get bored with drill. Keep sessions short and start water work early.

Care and grooming

The coat does not shed in the usual way; it must be clipped and combed on a schedule or it will mat. Plan on regular grooming.

Shedding

Low; loose hair stays in the coat until it is combed out.

Health

Portuguese Water Dogs may develop hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and GM1 storage disease in some lines. Ask breeders about hip, eye, and DNA testing.
